Dear MDD Chalice Lighter,

Thank you for your generous commitment to growing our faith by helping other UU Churches in the Mountain Desert District (MDD). The first call for FY20 is to assist the South Valley Unitarian Universalist Society in Salt Lake City, Utah with a building project.

The Church Board President writes,

“A Chalice Lighter grant will help us complete Project Welcome. In 2017 our Director of Religious Exploration brought to our attention that one of our youth does not have access to our education rooms in the Annex due to lack of accessibility. All entrances to this wing have stairs, and this student is wheelchair bound. Our Jr High and Sr High classrooms are in this annex, and this student will be entering Jr High the fall of 2019. We also host New Member classes, OWL classes, and our Wellspring Wednesday’s adult RE programs in this wing so adults meet here as well. We want to be mindful of, and responsive to, the needs of our congregants living with disabilities.

“We raised $9,700 for the accessibility portion of Project Welcome, which was enough to fund the construction of an exterior ramp and an accessible door with handicapped access system to the Annex. However, our main entry doors are also not completely accessible. We have members and friends of our congregation who use wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. We have families living with blindness, spina bifida, lupus, cancer, orthopedic injuries and illnesses, and illnesses of aging. Our doors do not open widely enough to accommodate their entry comfortably or independently. We are applying for a grant of $9,850 to fund the second half of our accessibility campaign to respond to this need. We would be very grateful for the assistance from our larger UU community in responding to the needs of our members and friends living with disabilities.”
