Procedure to create an email list with yahoogroups.com

I strongly recommend that before trying the procedure below, that you seek out a young at heart web-savvy person from your congregation to help you. This achieves several objectives:
- It makes someone feel useful, which increases one's sense of belonging
- It helps create friendship and build community within your congregation
- It can be another inter-generational activity
However, if such a young person is unavailable from your congregation, then try the following:
- You'd need a yahoo ID and password. This is a free service. If you don't have one, simply go to
http://groups.yahoo.com and sign in as a new user and follow the instructions. You'll need to give yahoo your "other" email address that's not with yahoo. They'll send you an email message confirming your ID and password.
Once you've a yahoo ID and password, you can go back to http://groups.yahoo.com and sign in.
On the top right, you'll see two links: "Start a Group" and "My Groups". Click on "Start a Group."
Under "Group Categories" click on "Religion and Beliefs", then "Unitarian- Universalism" then "Place my group in Unitarian-Universalism."
Type in your group name, which is limited to (I think) 20 characters. Type in your group email address. I suggest it starts with "mdd-something" with "something" which describes your group's purpose. This will be consistent with the nomenclature of other MDD email lists. Then type in a short description of the purpose of your list. Hit "Continue."
Next step: you need to verify that you are a human being (and not a robot) by typing in the "secret word" they provide you. Hit "Continue."
Next page: hit "Customize Group".
Next page: hit "Get Started."
Next page: select the appropriate list options. Suggest "unlisted" (to prevent spam), "join with my approval" (to prevent un-invited spammers) and "only group members may post" (for privacy.) These options can be changed later. Click "Next."
Select defaults. Click "next."
Select defaults.
Click "Finish."
Click "go to group" and start inviting people to join by clicking on "Invite members". They will simply need to reply to the email sent by the system.
If, however, you already have permission to subscribe your members, you could
skip to the bottom of the "Invite members" dialogue page and click on the "add
members" link. This options should be exercised with caution.
Note: if you don't see your group after Step 12, it probably means that you have not established the connection between your yahoo ID and your "other" email address which yahoo needs to know. You'd need to log out and log back in again and click on "edit my membership". There, you'll find instructions on how to make that connection. Wait a few minutes for yahoo to send you a verification number which you'd need to complete the process.
