Mountain Desert District Emergency Relief Fund
Colorado Springs is once again experiencing devastating wild fires. At this writing on the morning of June 17 we know that the Black Forest Fire has consumed 14,198 acres resulting the loss of two lives and 485 homes. Firefighters report that it is 65% contained this morning. This is another beautiful area of Colorado east of I-25 where the foothills of the Rockies roll into the high plains of eastern Colorado. The trauma of another devastating fire is palpable in Colorado Springs. Our Unitarian Universalist congregations are responding heroically again.
The MDD Emergency Relief Fund allows us to offer timely financial assistance to our Unitarian Universalist community as they begin to recover and rebuild following the fires. Informed by other districts where fires have raged we know there can be serious secondary impact from a fire-smoke damage, health problems, loss of employment, etc. Even with good insurance many families will incur unexpected costs due to the fires. We have started to make gifts to Coloradans who are evacuated from their homes and need to meet special needs.
As we pray for rapid full containment of these wild fires recognizing the continued vulnerability of these communities to flash flooding and other natural disasters heightened by the fires. This fund will become a continuing source of assistance across the mountain west. We cannot accept donated items. Please give collected items to other non-profit agencies in your area.
