This is sent to new subscribers to the JUC email list:

Dear jucemail subscriber:

Welcome to JUC's e-mail distribution list! Thank you for subscribing. By sending an e-mail message to the address jucemail@egroups.com, the message will automatically be distributed to all subscribers to the list.

Please review the following guidelines for list use. KEY POINTS ARE IN ALL CAPS with additional info in lower case. The contents are summarized as follows:

  1. List Managers - who to contact with suggestions or problems.
  2. The Basics - how to send a message and remove your address from the list.
  3. EGroups Account Maintenance - how to sign in and manage your EGroups account.
  4. List Overview - intended use, general guidelines.
  5. General List Etiquette - tips to be a more savvy list user.
  6. What to Post - good uses of the list.
  7. What Not to Post - no attachments, advertising, etc.
WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO PRINT AND/OR SAVE THIS MESSAGE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. In addition to this (adequately printable) HTML formatted version, you can download a "portable document format" (PDF) version. You may also request that a list manager send you an updated edition of these guidelines at any time.

This edition is effective March 1, 2000

The guidelines have been established in order to keep this a high quality e-mail distribution list; not just available, but desirable to JUC members and friends.

(1) LIST MANAGERS

The list owner and designated moderators (the list managers) define and enforce the list use guidelines, publicize the list, have the ability to change some of the list features, approve subscribers, ban anyone who abuses the list, etc. EGroups defines the owner as the creator of the list who has primary authority over list content, membership and features.

DIRECT ALL COMMENTS ABOUT USE GUIDELINES TO A LIST MANAGER, NOT TO THE LIST. The addresses of the list managers are shown below.

LIST MANAGERS AND E-MAIL ADDRESSES:

E-MAIL ADDRESS TO ALL LIST MANAGERS:
jucemail-owner@egroups.com
An e-mail sent to this address will reach all designated list managers.

OWNER: Ben Blee, benblee@att.net

MODERATORS: Linda Bradford, others to be announced.

As with other JUC lay-led groups, the list managers are volunteers with other commitments. We are all interested in jucemail being successful and we will make every effort to ensure that it meets the needs of the subscribers (within the constraints of EGroups and our own abilities). Contact any one of us (by phone or e-mail) if you have comments or need help.

(2) THE BASICS

TO POST A MESSAGE TO THE LIST, send your e-mail to:
jucemail@egroups.com

REPLYING TO THE LIST VS. THE AUTHOR: This list is configured so that you will reply to the person who sent the message rather than to the list. If you wish to reply to the whole list, you must place the list address (jucemail@egroups.com) in the "To" line in the outgoing header.

TO REMOVE YOUR ADDRESS FROM THE LIST, send an e-mail to: jucemail-unsubscribe@egroups.com. Your message must originate from your subscribing e-mail address and you will need to reply to an e-mail sent to you by EGroups confirming that you want to unsubscribe.

THIS LIST IS NOT MODERATED which means that any message sent to the list goes directly to all subscribers.

THE LIST IS RESTRICTED TO SUBSCRIBERS. Browsers on the EGroups and e-Groups web site cannot access the list of subscribers or archives of posted messages; only subscribers to the list can do so. Further, we require that all subscribers be a member or friend of JUC. Former JUC members who have moved away are permitted to continue to subscribe.

(3) EGROUPS ACCOUNT MAINTENANCE

RETURN TO THE EGROUPS HOME PAGE (www.egroups.com) ANY TIME TO MODIFY YOUR SUBSCRIPTION: Sign in with your complete e-mail address and password. You can change your delivery options and user profile, redirect messages to a new e-mail address, change your password and view past messages in the list archives.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS BE SURE TO MAKE THE CHANGE WITHIN YOUR EGROUPS ACCOUNT (see above). If you're having trouble, contact a list manager for help.

INACTIVE E-MAIL ADDRESSES WILL BE DELETED FROM THE LIST: If your e-mail address becomes inactive (posts are "bouncing" back to EGroups), we will attempt to contact you to get the problem corrected. Should you fail to respond or correct the problem within a reasonable time (30 days or so), your inactive e-mail address will be deleted by a list manager.

(4) LIST OVERVIEW

THIS LIST IS INTENDED TO BE A PUBLIC FORUM TO ENHANCE COMMUNICATION AT JUC, suitable for viewing by all members and friends, including children. In short, if your message is not something you would say publicly at a JUC event or want published in The Crier, don't post it to this list.

PRIVATE POSTS BETWEEN TWO PARTIES OR AMONG SMALL GROUPS BELONG ON PRIVATE E-MAIL, NOT THIS LIST.

BEING ON THIS LIST IS A PRIVILEGE, NOT A RIGHT. The list managers reserve the right toward other subscribers to the list.

THE LIST MANAGERS MAKE THE LIST POLICIES in consultation as needed with the Board of Trustees, Ministers and Church Administrator. We remain open to suggestions for ways to improve this list.

(5) GENERAL LIST ETIQUETTE

CONCISE IS BETTER: We're all busy and no one wants to scroll through screen after screen of text.

USE A DESCRIPTIVE SUBJECT LINE. Many people use the subject line to decide whether they want to read a message.

REPLY PRIVATELY WHEN YOUR MESSAGE ISN'T OF INTEREST TO THE GROUP. If a discussion develops and you want to make a point that contributes, post your reply to the mailing list. If your comment is personal or something off the topic of the list, send your reply directly to the person who wrote the message. If your post is intended for a specific individual and not for the entire list, then it should be sent to that individual. A message that starts with "Dear Hilda" should be sent to Hilda, not the list. A post that says "great comment Cliff" and nothing else should go to Cliff.

WHEN REPLYING, INCLUDE ONLY THE RELEVANT PART OF THE ORIGINAL MESSAGE. Most e-mail pertain to your message. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE REPLYING FROM THE DAILY DIGEST VERSION OF THE LIST.

CUTTING & PASTING: If you cut and paste something into your email message to the list, it can arrive as gibberish unless you are able to copy TEXT ONLY (and not the underlying program you are copying from).

DISCUSSIONS may develop. Don't post unless you have something substantive to say. Avoid "me too" posts unless you add something to the discussion. If you disagree with something, take issue with the idea, not personalities. Don't continue an irrelevant thread that someone else has started.

USE OF AUTOMATIC REPLY FEATURES (also known as "Vacation Spam"): Do not set your some specified future date. An automatic reply sends your vacation message to EVERY list member EVERY time any list member posts to the list. THERE ARE TWO SOLUTIONS: (1) If you have the ability, set your system to indicate who gets the "I'm out of the office" messages and who doesn't. Make sure "jucemail" is on the "no" list. (2) Otherwise, when you go on vacation, you'll need to log on to eGroups and change your mail delivery option to "No mail/Web only" which means you'll still be on the list, but you read your mail on the list archives. Upon returning, re-set your mail delivery to your preference: "Individual e-mails" or "Daily Digest."

(6) WHAT TO POST

KEEP YOUR POSTS RELEVANT TO JUC AND/OR OUR UU PRINCIPLES. Good uses are announcing hospitalizations and memorial services), committee meetings with broad appeal, social concerns, and requests for assistance or information.

REQUESTS FOR ASSISTANCE OR SERVICES: Please use discretion to request a roommate, over-do it. We'll see how this goes.

TICKETS TO AN EVENT ONE IS UNABLE TO ATTEND ON SHORT NOTICE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXCEPTION TO THE BAN ON ADVERTISING.

(7) WHAT NOT TO POST

Don't send e-mail with ATTACHMENTS to the list. THE LIST HAS BEEN CONFIGURED TO DISCARD ATTACHMENTS. The reason: if attachments were permitted, those receiving the digest version cannot receive them and some email programs cannot read them. The SOLUTION: post an offer to send it off-list only to those who specifically request it.

Don't post ADVERTISING of any kind. This includes your business (whether products or services), garage sale, cars, furniture, etc. The ONE EXCEPTION IS SHORT-NOTICE TICKETS to an event one is unable to attend.

Don't post CHAIN LETTERS, PETITIONS, MULTI LEVEL MARKETING OFFERS, LONG JOKES, VIRUS WARNINGS OR ITEMS YOU FOUND ON THE INTERNET, no matter how worthy they sound.

Don't post QUESTIONABLE INFORMATION. Please be sure of your source or that you personally know the information to be true. house- sitter, transportation, etc. OK to post these, but don't events, "news from the pews" (such as births, deaths, own system to tell all of us, over and over, that you are out until programs provide a way to "quote" the text of the message to which you are replying. Including the message puts your message in context. Delete the parts of the message that aren't relevant, so each reader doesn't have to wade through headers, signatures, and other stuff that doesn't to suspend or remove the privilege from any subscriber who abuses the list, violates the list use guidelines or exhibits offensive conduct
